Why Watching Military Shows With A Military Man Is Tricky

I love watching TV and movies with my husband. It's a way to spend time together. We always send the kids upstairs at 8 and then it's our time. But sometimes it's not easy watching shows with my husband. Especially if they are military shows. Or if a military member pops up in the show. It happens often, because Tom is only interested in programs or movies where things are blowing up, people are blowing up, and lots of guns and tanks and explosions are occurring.

He's been deployed multiple and has been in the military for fifteen years now, so he's learned some things.

I think it's great that he's learned some things, but sometimes his knowledge can get distracting.

Here are some of the comments he has made as we watched TV or a movie together:

1. "The guns are all wrong. You'd have to cock it twice to get it to fire." Me: "Ha, you said cock."

2. "That gun doesn't even SOUND like that."

3. "The uniforms don't look right. That medal wouldn't be there. That other one looks weird. His medals aren't straight. They're crooked. No way would a general walk around like that. No way."

4. "That kind of gun doesn't cause that sort of damage. It couldn't blow through a wall like that on the first time."

5. "Why does the tank look like that? It's all wrong."

6. "Not all vets are complete psychos. Why do they keep making vets act like assholes in all these shows?" (He was especially miffed at the way they were portrayed in the latest season of Orange Is The New Black.)

7. "That's a 240 Bravo machine gun, not a 50 cal. Why did that dumb ass troop call it the wrong thing?" Me: "WTF? Does it matter?" Him, quite serious: "Oh. It matters."

So yes, it can be rather distracting. But I'm almost used to it now. And if I'm watching one of my girly movies and someone shows up in uniform, I scan it and I'm like, "Those medals are all wrong."

Thanks, hun!

  1. LOL - this sounds just like my husband and watching farming/agriculture movies. 😉

  2. Same here! BUT, I'm just as annoying during any legal shows or movies about law.

  3. I can totally relate! My husband is a US Navy Veteran and he definitely makes the similar comments--especially with the uniform!! hah

  4. Now that would be interesting to hear his commentary. Like my husband, who is a lawyer, always says the shows about the legal profession get it wrong.

  5. I used to do that when I was working as a Forensic Scientist. I spent the entirety of CSI alternating between "that doesn't work like that" and "I've done that in real life"

    ReplyDelete
  6. I bet that would be tricky. It is probably annoying for him that they don't get things correct, poor guy. Thank you both for your service.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Very true. I can't complain about guns but having been in the military as well you do catch the obvious mistakes. The same would go for hospital settings and medical issues, equipment etc.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Oh my goodness this post! I'm loving your response in number 1 there! tbh that'd likely be my response too!

    ReplyDelete
  9. That's too funny. Shows/movies should definitely have someone on set to correct these mistakes as sometimes they're a BIG deal! At least you can say you've learned something?

  10. Hahaha, this reminds me of an experience I had in college. My two best friends and I shared an apartment and we had a 4th roommate who none of us were really friends with. We just needed a 4th to split the rent! But, my friend and I were sitting on the couch watching Greys Anatomy and the 4th roommate came in (who was a pre-med student) and she kept making comments like, "Well that's not even medically possible" or "They're going to do surgery on THAT and they're entering through THERE? That's wrong."
And, finally, my best friend completely lost it and stood up and yelled at her and said, "STOP IT. I DON'T WATCH THIS SHOW TO ANALYZE THE MEDICAL STUFF. I WATCH IT BECAUSE EVERYONE SLEEPS WITH EACH OTHER. SO LEAVE US ALONE!"

To this day, my best friend and I will laugh about that moment. And me? I just can't watch Greys Anatomy any more! Haha.

  11. Ahhhh! If only he'd learned more husband tricks in his time lol!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hahahaha yes!!!!! I cannot watch anything military related with my husband, he picks everything apart.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I have a 10 year old who does this with all movies. We call him an old man in a little body.

    ReplyDelete
  14. LOL, that's how it is in our house when a medical show comes on. Movies and tv shows have so much money, you'd think the people they pay to ensure accuracy would get it right.

    ReplyDelete
  15. This reminds me of watching medical shows with friends who work in hospitals! I wish the writers of these things were take more care to be accurate

  16. My police officer husband is the SAME WAY! Omg it's not fun to watch TV with someone like that. haha He said cock! :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Same story here. My hubby loves these kinda stuff and I hate it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Must be funny since people typically watch military shows for fun and military people probably take it wayy too seriously lol

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ha! This is amusing. I can totally get what you are saying as my hubby is in the film and production industry and rips films apart lol

    ReplyDelete
  20. Omg i needed that laugh. Thank you <3

    ReplyDelete
  21. LOL its like you can't defy the expert. He nailed it!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Such a great post, This is my hubby sometimes when we watch TV

    ReplyDelete
  23. This made me smile. When I married my husband 23 years ago I quickly learned how tricky it is watching a military movie with him.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ha, I think it's awesome! Send his resume into Hollywood as a military liaison to get things straight. I bet he isn't the only one who watches and thinks the same things.

    ReplyDelete
  25. its nice to see the inside of his thoughts! I can only imagine how it must be ;)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Lol. Sounds like they need to hire him as a consultant. Hint...hint.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I love the commentary! I am an actor so I critique anything I watch but not out loud.

    ReplyDelete
  28. LOL! I need that laugh. Thanks for sharing this love!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Lol... my grandfather was in the military and any time he saw any kind of fighting or war scene on tv or in a movie, he would totally pick it apart lol

    ReplyDelete
  30. I enjoyed reading this post! My husband and I have our own areas of "expertise" and this scenario always happens when we watch TV!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Totally laughed throughput the post. Both me and my hubby are doctors .We both become this way when there's a doctor based show going on

    ReplyDelete
  32. Having been in the military for fifteen years, I am sure you must be having some amazing experience watching out such military shows or movies with your husband. Despite the distraction I am sure you are going to learn a lot from him and it should be a fun experience as well.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I can imagine! It's quite nice too since you also learn the way that everything in the show should be!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I've never tried watching with someone who's been in the military before but I assume it's distracting and a little funny. This is exactly how I imagined it would be like.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm the same when my profession is portrayed. Annoys the hell out of me!

    ReplyDelete
  36. #1 made me laugh so hard!!!! This is how I feel when I watch anything about computers with my husband.

    ReplyDelete
  37. hahah #1. That sounds just like me!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Lol, this is too funny because it's like that where anyone is an "expert" in their field and sees something that isn't quite right on tv. Some of us don't care about the facts, we just want mindless entertainment, amirite?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I understand because I feel that way with people when it comes to psychology and dance. Because everyone just gets things misconstrued,

    ReplyDelete
  40. Love reading your post! I can totally relate this to my software techie scientist husband!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Good for him!
My husband and I were both pastors and theologians and we get huffy about the way clergy and priests are always prorated ..... and lay Christians (especially women)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Bahaha I can only imagine...! #1 was too funny.. ;)

    ReplyDelete

  43. hihihi i understand you the same with my dad when we watch tv shows on firefighters xD

    ReplyDelete
  44. Haha oh gosh, I can imagine this would be both funny and annoying at the same time. Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  45. That's too funny! I don't catch things like that because, well, I'm not in the military and I don't know, but I do catch other weird things and always have to point them out.

    ReplyDelete
  46. This is hilarious! My brother was in ER nurse for a very long time so watching medical shows he would do the exact same thing LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  47. This is me watching any movie to be honest, mainly space movies! I always question everything and highlight how unrealistic things are ahahah

    ReplyDelete
  48. Haha, I can see how this can apply to any expert in their field when anything pertaining to their field pops up on screen. But it can be a good learning experience for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  49. ahhaahaha...."You said cock"! You're so funny. My too, i have no clue about guns.

    ReplyDelete
  50. LOL my dad does the same thing, it’s almost like I’m not even watching the movie because the whole thing is being analyzed.

    ReplyDelete
  51. To me, it sounds so much fun to watch the military show with a military man. You get to learn so much real stuff and not those fake thing in the movie. I would love to experience that once with a military man.

    ReplyDelete
  52. My cousin is in the military as well, and it's very similar watching movies/shows with him as well.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I bet it would be really frustrating to see your profession misconstrued by hollywood all the time. Although it would be hard to watch a movie with someone commenting on it this much!

    ReplyDelete
  54. That's crazy fun! I would learn so much and I would love it. I am all about the facts, ma'am.

    ReplyDelete
  55. My dad used to do the same thing about the uniforms, and then also make comments on all the medical scenes, since he was a military doctor. I think it is just human nature.

    ReplyDelete
  56. hahaha that's funny. Listening to him throughout the show must be fun time and also interesting to learn facts.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh dear, I am so sorry for you, Lol!! I cannot imagine watching TV with someone who goes on like that at all. In fact, if I watch those kind of shows I will have nightmares for weeks on end. I guess you have no choice but to accept him like that.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Ha ha ha, this sounds so familiar. Hubby does the same thing when we watch a movie or a show about military stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Haha! I guess you get a whole new perspective when you watch military shows with your hubby. lol I love the last paragraph. I'm impressed that you noticed the medals were in the wrong order!

    ReplyDelete
  60. My husband is quiet when we watch any show or movie. I'm the one who's loud, lol. But I can only imagine if he talks the whole time we're watching a movie :D

    ReplyDelete
  61. Oh I can imagine, haha! It is a bit distracting but still interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  62. This is absolutely hilarious. His reactions and feedback are all valid. I can listen to him all day.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I can totally relate to this. But with my husband, it's about history. Like...that wasn't right. That didn't happen. They did it wrong. Etc! LOL.

  64. watching any show with a pro on that matter is tricky. it is most of time inaccurate

    ReplyDelete
  65. OMG Amber! Best post ever! I'm serious! I'm laughing like there is no tomorrow!

    ReplyDelete
  66. wow! It's a lot of fun to watch a military movie with a military!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I love reading your stories about you and your husband. It's such an interesting insight into a world that's completely foreign to me.

    ReplyDelete
  68. This totally makes sense. When you are knowledgeable about something, it is easy to spot when things aren't accurate!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Lol This is so funny do you ever make him watch a cooking show and then dissect every ingredients and gadget they are using just to show off your cooking knowledge to your partner??? It might work if you give him the same medicine.

    ReplyDelete
  70. My dad acts the same way. He is so critical of shows, but it is always funny!

    ReplyDelete
  71. HAHAHA. I have the same issue when I watch shows with firefighters in it. Sometimes it makes it hard to enjoy because they're just pointing out what is wrong the entire time. Then whenever there is a psych on TV, my partner always asks if that's how session would really go.

    ReplyDelete
  72. This is pretty comical. I guess it's like when my husband watches car movies. Sometimes they'll give the wrong weight, etc. and he gets sensitive.
