We Got Another Class Pet

So, over the Winter Break, my daughter brings home another permission slip to bring home a class pet.

(Remember we brought home rats during Thanksgiving Break.)

I was like, "Okay, fine," and Natalie said, "I hope we get Speedy the guinea pig! He's so cute!"

As it turns out, she did.

I have never been around guinea pigs before, so I didn't know what to expect.

For starters, the cage collapsed when I picked Natalie up, because apparently you can't lift from the sides. I immediately did this when I took the cage, thinking everything was bolted down, and Natalie was like, "You have to lift from the bottom."

That would have been news to give me BEFORE I went for the cage.

Luckily, Speedy didn't escape. He just hit in his igloo and was like, "Oh geez, now what?"

When we got home I told Natalie to take good care of Speedy.

"I will," she said solemnly. "I took good care of the rats. I didn't let the cats eat them!"

Thank goodness. I always worry when we bring a class pet home that it'll die and Natalie will return to school and be known as the Student Who Killed A Class Pet.

I checked on Speedy a few times, and I didn't know they made noises. Coos, purrs, things like that.

"Is he broken?" I asked Natalie.

"No. That's just sound guinea pigs make," she replied.

Oh.

Also, our cats didn't eat him. They were curious, but I stayed close when Natalie was cleaning out Speedy's cage.

Ruby was all, "WTF is that?"

Max was all, "What kind of cat is this?"

But neither made a move to eat him.

So good news! Speedy survived!

Natalie is going to miss him.

In fact, we made a deal: if she does well on her report card, she can have her own guinea pig.

Have you ever been around guinea pigs?

  3. I believe that the Guinea Pigs are a really beautiful animal, affectionate and perhaps even quite manageable ... surely your guide is very useful!

  4. I bet she is going to have the best report card of her life! LOL. That is fun that her class does that, though. The schools around here don't do anything like that.

  8. We took our turn when one of my kids was in elementary school taking care of the class guinea pig. Was so afraid we would kill it over christmas break. That is our experience thank goodness.

  9. I used to have a guniea pig in my younger days and it followed me around the yard like a dog, seriously, lol. My granddaughter has been wanting one but I think she needs to wait a couple of years before I buy her one. She's not at the responsible age yet but I can't wait until she is.

  10. Your cat is too cute. I love that her school still does class pets. My son never brought a class pet home in middle school. Speedy is so adorable!

  11. I'm glad she enjoyed the pet. I love that you worried about her returning to school and being known as the "student who killed a class pet." LOL

  13. Oh my goodness, I remember my children's guinea pig! The girls begged and begged to have one. I ended up being the one to clean up Jake's cage each and every day and take him out for exercise. And unfortunately the smell from that little guy was horrific. Seriously smelly. And we are a very clean and tidy family, so that was a complete deal breaker. We ended up finding Jake a new home with a good friend of ours.

  15. This would make me so nervous for the same reason- I’d be so afraid the class pet would die on our watch! He is a really sweet guinea pig! I don’t know much about them but have heard they make great pets!

  18. Oh my goodness that would be my biggest fear, that we would kill the class pet! So glad it went well. I think it's great kids have pets.

  19. My girls don't have class pets. They have class toys, like a bear and a Woody doll. So much easier to take care of than a live animal :)

  21. I love pets but I don't have any because it needs time and care. I never been around Guinea pig but he is looking so cute in the photos. I could understand your daughter feelings when she had to return him. She definitely deserve her own pig when she'll do good in her class reports.

  32. My best friend has a guinea pig. They are very cute! Looks like your daughter is an expert is caring for the class pet.

  33. Don’t do it! They live a LONG time (up to 10 years) and they stink. Unless you want to take care of it when your kids are out of the house...

  34. I love the cats expression 😂😂 I have to say, I’ve never wanted a guinea pig ever and we don’t want them in our house, but it looks like your daughter is so happy and learning great responsibility.

  35. Guinea pigs r truly adorable. Most importantly your child like it.

  36. Glad speedy survived all of this. I know that we lost a fish who was a class pet and it sucked to lose the pet when we got back. We also misplaced food we had to re-purchase for the class pet.

  38. What a fun thing for kids to be able to do! This is a new one on me. Yes, my kids had guinea pigs (along with multiple other critters) when they were little. They all seemed to have food-related names! A dark brown guinea pig was Hershey, and a brown and white one was Oreo!

  39. So cute! I love the photo of the cat and the guinea pig looking at each other. Their expressions are awesome.
