Valentine's Day In Middle School

For starters, there are tests on Valentine's Day in Middle School.

Natalie was offended when she saw her math teacher was having a test.

"On Valentine's Day!" Natalie shrieked. The teacher was nice enough to send out a warning, but still, Natalie was irritated.

In her eyes, each teacher should have a mini party, which of course would be impossible with all the students.

"Gosh, I hope the elementary school kids know how good they have it," Natalie grumbled. "Enjoy your party while I take A TEST!"

She decided to pass out bags of Valentine's Day goodies to her friends.

But when she got to school, she was told everything needed to go in her locker. The bags were distracting.

"But school hasn't even started yet!" Natalie argued.

Still. In the locker. Now.

Natalie quickly passed out bags to friends she found, then she shoved the rest in the locker. Also, the day before it was announced that if Valentine's Day stuff didn't fit into lockers, then it MUST NOT BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL.

That meant no giant teddy bears:

No balloons.

No huge bouquets of flowers.

"I mean. Middle school can be so LAME," Natalie huffed.

However, she knew one way to brighten up the day, test or not. She wanted a full out Valentine's Day outfit. I think of Valentine's Day as a Hallmark Holiday, but Natalie loves the pink and excitement of it all. Even though she was like, "I don't have a Valentine." But then the night before a boy DID ask her to be his Valentine and Natalie was all, "Sure." And then realized she barely knew who he even was.

"He's in my science class. He has lots of hair," she said, flipping through the yearbook.

"Shouldn't you, I don't know, KNOW the boy who is going to be your Valentine?" I asked.

"MOM," was the response. "Please."

Please what? I never found out.

Natalie picked out an outfit from Rue 21. With accessories, of course, because what's an outfit without accessories?

She had to wear tights with it, of course, because showing a knee at her school is against the dress code.

"The boys will apparently fall over in shock," Natalie explained.

She said people liked her outfit. She told me, "Yeah, a boy said I got cake," and I was like, "What flavor?" and she went, "Mom! It means I have a good butt."

Cake=butt now?

"You shouldn't be objectified like that," I answered and Natalie went, "Mom, it's fine, it's a COMPLIMENT."

I asked how it went with her Valentine, the boy who asked her the night before, and she said they said hi and went about their day.

"That's...it?" I asked, confused.

"Yes," Natalie responded primly.

She said some teachers were nice and let them be on their phones. She only saw two girls cry because their boyfriends didn't remember to get them anything.

Oh, and that math test she had? Not good. People kept trying to turn it in, the teacher would look it over and say it was wrong.

"She told me it was wrong like three times before the bell rang," Natalie said. "I wasn't the only one. But that's what happens when you try to have a test on Valentine's Day. Who cares about the volume of a prism when there's chocolate AND we found out Hopper is still alive?"

So that's Valentine's Day in Middle School. There are tests. Giant bears aren't allowed. And there's crying. Also, you might just say hi to your Valentine and that's it.

But at least there are cute Valentine's Day outfits. With accessories.

  1. Awww, so nice of Natalie to prepare little gifts for her friends. I'm sorry the school isn't a little bit more open to Valentine's Day as it would clearly bring joy to the kids.

  4. Wow, that is one tough school. You have to let kids be kids, or they will not learn as well, I see it with my teen!

  9. Natalie looks great in her outfit! I was a little surprised about the "no knees" in middle school, that seems so weird to me. Does that mean people can't wear shorts either?

  18. Valentine's Day was also cultural day at my daughter's school. She learned a salsa routine and was planning to make and bring in buñuelos, but she woke up with a fever and spent the day in bed instead. :(

  41. Love this & her Cute Vday look!! My teen always tells me how she misses the days of handing out Valentines at school. LOL

  42. That would have irritated me too about not being able to hand those out to friends. Our schools always let us give them to the office and the office had a room set up for all the Valentines and at the end of the day they'd call everyone down to get the valentine's. It's to bad not all schools would do that. Glad she was able to get together a fun outfit though!

  43. It's interesting how elementary kids don't appreciate Valentine's Day parties and that Middle School students may have a test on that special day. Kids will have a virtual celebration this Valentine's Day.

  44. She is so cute! My oldest was saying the same thing about VDay parties haha!
