I agree, it's an odd tradition Texas has. Maybe if I grew up here I'd understand it.
So normally the day before Homecoming students wear these mums. Generally they are school colors. But Natalie wanted a Tangled mum. You know, the Disney movie? You're also supposed to represent what you do in high school on it. As you see, Natalie does theatre.
I looked it up and one site said the mums are to show the kids how much their parent loves them? Or if they are in a relationship a couple exchanges a mum. Basically most of the sites say it happens because it's tradition. There's no real reason. It just happens. It's also meant to support the football team at the game. People will wear their mums there.
Some of the mums are gigantic. These are generally worn by seniors. I do not know how some people walk around. Google it. You'll be amazed. Natalie's was easy to wear. They generally are worn around the neck like a necklace. The boys usually wear smaller ones on wrists. Some just have a tiny one clipped to their shirt. But this is Texas, so a lot of folks are like "the bigger, the better!"
Natalie did not want too big, which is a good thing, seeing as I paid someone to make hers. I am not crafty. Obviously the larger a mum is, the more it's going to cost. Some mums have stuffed animals on it, plus all sorts of trinkets. Natalie's didn't have a ton. She did have a small cow bell on the bottom. When she walked while wearing this, I thought of the scene in Game of Thrones where the lady follows Cersei around with that bell going "shame, shame, shame."
The people who make these mums are incredibly talented. I purchased mine through All 4 A Diva. If you are in the San Antonio area, check her out for next year.
Natalie says she'll probably keep with her movie mum tradition. She's always liked to be different. And not everyone did the school colors. She said some were pink, some were blue. Some even lit up. You can do whatever makes you happy.
I understand other states do not do this tradition and find this strange. I agree. It is. But you know, if it makes teens happy, why not? If it supports a team, cool!
Did you know about the Texas Homecoming Mum tradition?

I think I heard about it somewhere recently but I forget where! Natalie's looks cool!
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I'm hearing about Texas Homecoming Mum. Sounds fun and you're right, if it makes people happy, why not?
ReplyDeleteFirst that's a weird tradition, but the fact that you hired someone to do it is GENIUS. I never even thought of that my poor kids I could have saved them years of embarrassment!
ReplyDeleteThis is a cool tradition. My school does not do anything cool lke this.
ReplyDeleteMy cousins live in Texas so I was aware. We do mums for Homecoming but they are more like corsages. Ours are usually white or gold "spider" mums as large as we can get them, with black and gold ribbons (school colors) with football charms. I always loved mine.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you explained it, I've been wondering what it all meant.
ReplyDeleteThis is actually my first time learning about this tradition.
ReplyDeleteI love learning about other people's traditions! One of my good friends is from Texas. I'll have to ask her about this.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of this tradition but it's so cool and natalie's was so pretty

ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a fun tradition. I wish our schools did that. I think my kids would definitely participate too.

ReplyDeleteThe Texas homecoming mums are iconic, while we do not do those here as a floral design I have always seen and heard about them.
ReplyDeleteThat is an interesting tradition; I have certainly never heard of this before!
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I've never heard of this tradition. Sounds like fun!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a Tangled mum especially since I am a huge fan of the movie. I will never forget the "Shame, Shame" scene with Cersei.

ReplyDeleteI had no idea this was such a big Texas tradition! Some of those mums are incredible, and I love that Natalie chose a Tangled theme instead of the traditional school colors. It makes it so much more personal and fun!
ReplyDeleteMums are a big tradition in many places but have not seen a tangled theme before. i love that you personalized it and made it special. Just a fun thing and of the season.

ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this before! But I recently moved from New York to North Carolina, and there are a lot of things here that I am not used to, so I can see how a southern tradition like this is something I've never come across. It is an interesting idea!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't familiar with this tradition in Texas; the size of the chrysanthemum strikes me as unusual, but I think the important thing is for the young people to enjoy the tradition.
ReplyDeleteComing from Toronto, Canada, I've only ever heard of this homecoming concept from movies and TV shows! But this homecoming mum is a concept I absolutely have not heard of - but it's such a cool idea!
ReplyDeleteNatalie’s Tangled mum sounds so cute, especially with all the theatre details. It is fun that she chose something that matched her own style instead of just school colors!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, it sounds like these Mums come in such a wide range of colours and designs. I can't believe that they come even larger than the one Natalie is wearing. We don't really have traditions like that where we are.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of it but I think it is cute and I love how hers turned out.... such pretty colors and she looks amazing with it :)
ReplyDeleteI had no idea this was such a big Texas tradition! I love that Natalie made hers her own with the Tangled theme and included theatre too. The cowbell comparison made me laugh. 😂
ReplyDeleteNever heard of this before, but it sounds pretty cool. Thanks for the information, it was fun to read.
ReplyDeleteI’d heard of Texas homecoming mums, but I had no idea they could get THIS elaborate! 😂 Natalie’s Tangled-themed one is such a fun way to make the tradition her own, and honestly, I kind of love that you can personalize them however you want.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of such a thing and as a mom of twin girls, I would have loved to see the tradition at their HS on the East Coast. Natalie looks adorable wearing hers!
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of a Texas homecoming mum before! What an interesting tradition. I’m amazed by how elaborate and meaningful it can be.
ReplyDeleteI think this is such a fun tradition! I love how confident Natalie is and how she’s not afraid to be herself. Being unique really is something to celebrate. And as a Disney fan myself, I’m definitely loving her choice of a Tangled-themed mum!
