What Exactly Is A Texas Homecoming Mum?

I agree, it's an odd tradition Texas has. Maybe if I grew up here I'd understand it.

So normally the day before Homecoming students wear these mums. Generally they are school colors. But Natalie wanted a Tangled mum. You know, the Disney movie? You're also supposed to represent what you do in high school on it. As you see, Natalie does theatre.

I looked it up and one site said the mums are to show the kids how much their parent loves them? Or if they are in a relationship a couple exchanges a mum. Basically most of the sites say it happens because it's tradition. There's no real reason. It just happens. It's also meant to support the football team at the game. People will wear their mums there.

Some of the mums are gigantic. These are generally worn by seniors. I do not know how some people walk around. Google it. You'll be amazed. Natalie's was easy to wear. They generally are worn around the neck like a necklace. The boys usually wear smaller ones on wrists. Some just have a tiny one clipped to their shirt. But this is Texas, so a lot of folks are like "the bigger, the better!"

Natalie did not want too big, which is a good thing, seeing as I paid someone to make hers. I am not crafty. Obviously the larger a mum is, the more it's going to cost. Some mums have stuffed animals on it, plus all sorts of trinkets. Natalie's didn't have a ton. She did have a small cow bell on the bottom. When she walked while wearing this, I thought of the scene in Game of Thrones where the lady follows Cersei around with that bell going "shame, shame, shame."

The people who make these mums are incredibly talented. I purchased mine through All 4 A Diva. If you are in the San Antonio area, check her out for next year.

Natalie says she'll probably keep with her movie mum tradition. She's always liked to be different. And not everyone did the school colors. She said some were pink, some were blue. Some even lit up. You can do whatever makes you happy.

I understand other states do not do this tradition and find this strange. I agree. It is. But you know, if it makes teens happy, why not? If it supports a team, cool!

Did you know about the Texas Homecoming Mum tradition?

  3. First that's a weird tradition, but the fact that you hired someone to do it is GENIUS. I never even thought of that my poor kids I could have saved them years of embarrassment!

  5. My cousins live in Texas so I was aware. We do mums for Homecoming but they are more like corsages. Ours are usually white or gold "spider" mums as large as we can get them, with black and gold ribbons (school colors) with football charms. I always loved mine.

  40. I wasn't familiar with this tradition in Texas; the size of the chrysanthemum strikes me as unusual, but I think the important thing is for the young people to enjoy the tradition.
